Course Reflections

This is the third course in a three-course sequence designed to introduce students to foundations of education and issues in education leadership, and focuses on the economics of education.  This brought into the light yet an other perspective on education policy-making, the perspective of economists - where everything about schools is reduced to a production function, factor inputs, and outputs.   What amazed me was how much of education policy is driven by economists rather than educators.  Furthermore, I learned a new skill in academic writing in this course, i.e., writing book reviews.  I wrote reviews on Jonathan Kozol's Savage Inequalities: Children in America’s Schools and Richard Rothstein's Using Social, Economic, and Educational Reform to Close the Black-White Achievement Gap.   The two books helped me look into the darker side of the U.S. education system, where both race and socio-economic status of individuals set them up either for a success or a failure in their education and ultimately, in their life.  Finally, I further revised and build upon the literature review draft I wrote for EDLE 801/802 culminating in the final product.
