COMM 361 Online Journalism

The Best Way to get Hired?

Source provided by Poynter Online

It is graduation season and the George Mason University seniors are ready to step out into the world. Hopefully, the journalism students have taken advantage of the numerous opportunities right here at school. Internships are great for experience and add credentials to your resume. Students are also encouraged to check out GMU-TV and Broadside, the university’s student paper.

Eric Wee, a former reporter for The Washington Post, has made it easier for minority journalists to connect with employers on JournalismNext.com, a website that allows hopefuls to post resumes and chat with kindred spirits.”

Quick Tips:

  • Keep a copy of every article you’ve written
  • Post your achievements on the Internet through a personal Web site
  • Try to promote yourself by noting awards
  • Continue writing even when your classes are over
  • Try to join the school or community newspaper

From the numerous guest speakers this semester and in the past, I’ve learned that the small town newspapers often lead to the big break. Try to engage people with the stories that hit close to home because you’ll find that people thousands of miles away can relate.
