COMM 361 Online JournalismBroadsideIt is a known fact that students of George Mason University are always on the run. Almost half of the student population consists of commuters, driving to and from campus at all hours of the day. The students living on campus are equally as busy with tight schedules and heavy backpacks. Constantly moving can result in a lack of time to check on recent news updates as well as the week’s top headlines. Inside the Johnson Center, the mass of nearly 30,000 students can be seen interacting with each other while having a quick chat or lunch. It is mind boggling how your eye can follow at least one individual student moving from Point A to Point B. Now, zoom in. In one hand there is a tall cup of piping hot coffee equipped with a cardboard holder. Tightly gripped in the other hand, is a copy of Broadside, still warm from the printing press. As the informed student body, GMU students have a thirst for more than just lattes. Each building on the Fairfax campus is equipped with newsstands featuring dozens of copies of Broadside’s current issue. The information of the front page is consumed so quickly as students rush to the next building in between classes. It is crucial to spark the interest of students on the front page so more in-depth information can be found inside the newspaper. Students are seen during the day discussing the main issues, whether a controversy is agreed with or not. The purpose of Broadside is to inform and raise questions when it reaches the hands of a student. Now, with the Internet edition, Broadside can reach a larger audience and spread the news quicker. Broadside OnlineGeorge Mason University's student newspaper, Broadside, prints weekly and updates daily on the Internet. My Web site for my online journalism class has been featured on Broadside Online's Web site. I hope to write for the newspaper next semester. My Web site on Broadside |
