E-Mail Interview Advice

Source provided by Poynter Online

E-Mail interviews are great because of many different advantages but be aware of the disadvantages. Although the technology of today forces journalists to be convenient and quick, it may provide some issues. There are times where interviewers will send out E-mail that will not receive a reply because it either did not reach the correct individual or that the subject never responded. Just make sure to maintain common courtesy whenever interacting with another because any misunderstandings can lead to problems.

Pros:

  • They provide quick records of notes
  • It is easily accessible to people worldwide
  • It saves time because it is convenient
  • It’s great for people who write better than they speak

Cons:

  • The replier is anonymous
  • There are no spontaneous questions
  • Interviewers must wait for a response
  • E-Mail lacks tone and facial expressions with responses

Quick Tips:

  • Double-check your sources
  • Make sure you identify yourself clearly
  • Be aware that a copy is available for someone else to read

Get out there and begin reporting! You'll only learn as much as you try through experiences. Also, it's a great way to network sources through journalism professors and people in the community. Someone always knows someone else that can contribute to your story.
