Origins & Current Politics

Lesotho was formerly known as "Basutoland" under the rule of the British Colony and the Cape Colony Administrations before its independence in 1966.

Since then, the Kingdom of Lesotho has been led by chiefs and prime ministers while restructuring its government and politics to become a bicameral Parliamentary government featuring multiple political parties.

Lesotho's Economy

Improvements in communication and transportation facilities have led to increased access to international trade for Basotho markets, which export items like diamonds, clothing fabric, and water to countries like South Africa and the United States.

Issues in Basotho Society and Recommendations for the Future

  1. Universities in Lesotho do not have access to efficient Information and Communication Technologies, an integral part of higher-level education.
  2. Lesotho is also plagued with human trafficking. The government has attempted to eliminate trafficking in the recent past, but to no avail.
However, ICTs and their implementation in Basotho universities can perhaps strengthen the government's efforts to eradicate human trafficking permanently.
