A (DE)PRESSING NEED
HUMAN TRAFFICKING IN LESOTHO

HUMAN TRAFFICKING

A current issue in dire need of addressing in Lesotho is human trafficking.
Lesotho stands as a source, transit, and destination country for traffickers who sell men, women and children for forced labor and prostitution respectively.

Basotho women and children are subjected to domestic servitude and commercial sex trafficking.
Men provide forced labor in mining and agriculture, though they are also coerced into committing crimes.

Historically, women have turned to prostitution because there were few formal employment opportunities available to them.
In the 1970s, prostitution became a main attraction for South African tourists. It has expanded since then to include orphaned and defenseless children who have contracted Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS).
