G.S. Troop 2993

History -- 1995-96

Hike up Old Rag: Our troop hiked Old Rag Mountain again on October 29th, 1995, to prepare for the Hike-O-Ree. [By the way, Old Rag became so crowded, that the National Park Service began regulating the number of people who can hike on Old Rag Mountain during "peak times", so to speak. We used to consider climbing Old Rag an annual event, but we have since branched out and found other hikes just as fun and challenging.]

Boy Scout Hike-O-Ree: We attended the Boy Scout's 6th annual Venture Hike-O-Ree, November 3-5, 1995 at the Northern Virginia 4-H Educational Center in Front Royal, Virginia. We spent the night in tents (in VERY cold weather), and then hiked 10.2 miles on Little Devil's Stairs -- a great hike.

Service Project: In December, we purchased our favorite children's books, and recorded these books on tape. We gave the tapes and books along with a children's tape recorder/player to TACTS, The Arlington County Temporary shelter for battered women.

Cross-country Skiing: During the winter of 1996, our troop went cross-country skiing near Pittsburgh, PA.

Spring 1996: In addition to finishing the Silver Awards, we also had a bike ride on the Mt. Vernon Bike Trail beside the Potomac in Alexandria, a short hike along the C&O Canal, and a "shakedown" backpacking trip along the Appalachian Trail north of Harpers Ferry, West Virginia.

Our great adventure for 1996 was our two-week trip to England -- backpacking in the Lake District (Windermere, Ambleside, Grasmere, Patterdale, Keswick, etc.). We hiked over 70 miles in one week, seeing tarns and fell walking. The "high point" was climbing Mt. Helvelyn -- (similar to Knife Edge on Mt. Katahdin in Maine). We also enjoyed hearing from David, our resident poetry professor, about Wordsworth and the other Lake District Poets. While in Great Britain, we stayed in several hostels and some B&B's. We also spent a few days in London where we tried to do everything: we saw several plays, visited the British Museum, The Tate Gallery, the Museum of the City of London, Harrod's, and on and on. The most amazing thing is that we did our 2 week trip for only $1,250, including airfare on British Airways. We know because most of us had to earn the money ourselves! It was well worth it.
