G.S. Troop 2993

History -- 1994-95

This was the year we were preparing to go to Lenhok'sin High Adventure Camp, so many of our activities were related to that big trip.

Chincoteague: Our early fall campout was on the Eastern Shore again. We practiced compass skills, watched birds, had a lot of fun on the beach.

Service Project: In December, we sewed book bags for TACTS, The Arlington County Temporary Shelter, one of our favorite service projects.

Rock Climbing: On February 12th, 1995 we went to REI to rock climb on the indoor wall. We went up the vertical face, sometimes blindfolded!

Cross-Country Skiing: Our troop went cross-country skiing in Pennsylvania in February of 1995.

Orienteering: In March, we returned to the Prince William Forest to practice orienteering.

The Paw Paw Tunnel:

In April, 1995, we went biking along the C&O Canal. Our route took us through the Paw Paw Tunnel. This is 3,118 feet long, pitch dark, and damp -- perfect for telling ghost stories.

Hiking Along....: We took many weekend and one-day hikes to prepare for Lenhok'sin. During these trips, we took turns being the "crew chief" (keeping the map, keeping the group together, and assigning duties) and we began earning hours for our Girl Scout Cadette Leadership Awards. In May, we did a very steep hike called Dark Hollow in the Shenandoah National Park. We also tried out our new camping stoves and hiking boots. One of these trips was a backpacking trip near Old Rag Mountain. We ended up at The Appetite Repair Shop in Sperryville.

Lenhok'sin:

Between June 25th and July 1st of 1995, we went to Lenhok'sin High Adventure Camp, part of the Goshen Boy Scout Camp near Lexington, Virginia. By this time, we were Explorer Scouts, the co-ed section of the Boy Scouts. During the week, we backpacked to various activities throughout the camp, camping in our tents and cooking dehydrated food for every meal. We visited Widowmaker at the Lumberjack Outpost. There we threw axes and climbed a sixty-foot tree. We then visited C.O.P.E., a ropes course. Our third activity during the week was at Smithing, where we carved wood and made candles. Unfortunately, this was the week of severe flooding in the area of the camp, and it rained almost every day, so we weren't able to go kayaking (the lake had been flooded out), caving, or rock climbing. We still enjoyed the camp thoroughly though. AND, despite the rain, we earned the Trailblazer Award for our efforts -- we backpacked over 25 miles, climbed 2 mountains, did a service project, and performed a skit at the final campfire.
