Tools and Toolchain

All HTML on this site is hand-authored. No content management system, static site generator, or JavaScript framework is used. The site is deliberately static. With the exception of the tooltips, all content is deliberately static. The author does not have the expertise to make it mobile-friendly, and makes no apologies for that.

Operating system
Primary development machine runs ArcaOS (OS/2 successor) with JFS filesystem. Windows 11 is used for MiKTeX TeX builds.
Text editor
HTML is edited directly. No WYSIWYG editor is used for web pages.
TeX engine
XeLaTeX (part of MiKTeX) is used for all shirt source files. XeLaTeX is required for Hebrew and right-to-left text support via the bidi package. LuaLaTeX was considered but does not support bidi.
Chemical structure diagrams
The chemfig package is used for benzene ring diagrams in the Para DICE, Ortho DOX / Para DOX, and Meta phore shirt sources. All rings use Kekulé notation (alternating single and double bonds, specified via chemfig’s *6(…) syntax with double bond sep=4pt); the aromatic circle notation is not used. The ortho, meta, and para positions follow standard arene substitution nomenclature consistently across all three designs. Die faces in Para DICE are drawn with TikZ.
Shirt production pipeline
TeX and LibreOffice sources in shirts/ are built to 10″×10″ PDFs via XeLaTeX or LibreOffice export, then converted to 300 DPI PNG for upload to CaféPress. PDF-to-PNG conversion uses Poppler (pdftoppm).

The following table records the original authoring tool for each shirt and its current canonical source. Where both ODT and TeX exist, the TeX source is preferred for version control; the ODT is retained until a successful 10″×10″ build from TeX is verified.

Euler (Trigonometry)OpenOffice/LibreOfficeEuler.texOriginally Euler.odt; TeX version built and verified 10×10, 1 page 2026-08-26 (was silently overflowing to 3 pages -- portrait image had no explicit size, so its embedded 300 DPI metadata made scale=.5 render it ~10in tall by itself); ODT retained pending final review
GOP (Party of Treason)OpenOffice/LibreOfficeGOP.texODT converted to TeX; source images now present, built and verified 10×10 2026-08-26; ODT retained pending final review
GR field equationsLaTeXGR.texWritten ab initio in TeX
HessianOpenOffice/LibreOfficeHessian.texODT converted to TeX (pre-existing); switched from Garamond-Math to Cambria/Cambria Math 2026-08-26 (neither the original font nor the first two substitutes tried -- Latin Modern Math, TeX Gyre Termes Math -- are registered as OS fonts on the build machine, only present as MiKTeX LaTeX packages, which fontspec/XeTeX can't resolve by name; Cambria is a standard Windows font). Built and verified 10×10 from source. ODT retained pending final review
HouseboatOpenOffice/LibreOfficeHouseboat.texODT converted to TeX (pre-existing); source image (LakeUnionHouseboat.jpg) was missing from shirts/, copied over from web/Images/; built and verified 10×10 2026-08-26; ODT retained pending final review

Emmy NoetherOpenOffice/LibreOfficeNoether.texODT converted to TeX 2026-08-26; author list updated to the current 8-name canonical list (ODT predated Ladyzhenskaya/Viazovska/Voisin additions); ODT retained pending verified build
Butcher of Bucha (Puta)OpenOffice/LibreOfficePuta.texODT converted to TeX; ODT retained pending verified build
QoheletLaTeXQohelet.texWritten ab initio in TeX; requires XeLaTeX for Hebrew (Noto Serif Hebrew). Main font switched from TeX Gyre Termes to Times New Roman 2026-08-26 -- TeX Gyre Termes is a MiKTeX LaTeX package, not registered as an OS font on the build machine, so it couldn't be resolved by name; Times New Roman is what the design used originally anyway. Built and verified 10×10 from source
RFC 1149OpenOffice/LibreOfficeRFC1149.texODT converted to TeX 2026-08-26; ODT's embedded image was an unsourced stock photo, replaced with the properly-attributed NARA-512434 image already used on the web page; ODT retained pending verified build

AI-assisted authoring
Session notes, HTML pages, TeX sources, and scripts in this project were developed with the assistance of Claude (Anthropic), specifically Claude Sonnet, via claude.ai. Session logs and correction rules are maintained in AI-Priming.
Deployment scripts
Build and deployment scripts are written in ooRexx (Open Object Rexx), with compatibility maintained for OBJREXX 6.00 on ArcaOS.
Version control
Git, hosted at github.com/shmuelmetz (private repository). ODT files are stored in the repository as binary blobs for backup purposes only; diffs and merges are not meaningful for ODT. TeX sources are the preferred format for source control.
