Qualitative Evidence of Student Learning

Students definitely enjoyed the freedom and creativity the assignment offered. Being required to take photos to meet certain composition criteria did not seem to deter their enthusiasm. In fact, their enthusiasm for the project was possibly one reason their attention to the instructions regarding saving and copying files was less than stellar. (This concern will be covered more fully in the change or modify section.) The students were anxious to get started, rapidly checked out their cameras, and began making and executing their creative photography plans.

I walked through the room answering questions and monitoring safety. (One should never underestimate the lengths a middle school student will go in order to get a good photo.) Students seemed to be enjoying their work and were thoroughly engaged in the task. Several students stopped long enough to comment that this was a fun assignment. I was satisfied hearing students’ conversation using photo composition terms in an authentic context (as a photographer would).
