AIDS is caused by a virus called the
Human Immunodeficiency Virus
(HIV). HIV attacks the body's white blood cells which are part of the body's immune system to help protect a person from infections. When these cells are damaged, a person's ability to fend off disease decreases. Infected pregnant women can pass HIV to their baby during pregnancy or delivery, as well as through breast-feeding. People with AIDS often die from illneses that would not pose a threat to them
