Scientists have different theories about the origin of HIV but none have been proven. According to Medical Library, the earliest known case of HIV was from a blood sample collected in 1959 from a man in Kinshasha, Democratic Republic of Congo. (How he became infected is not known.) Genetic analysis of this blood sample suggests that HIV-1 may have stemmed from a single virus in the late 1940s or early 1950s.
In 1984 scientists proved that HIV causes AIDS.
In Vietnam, no HIV case was reported until December 1990, but
there had been over 56,000 cases of HIV infections by October 2002.
The HIV/AIDS epidemic has been developing rapidly. [3]
Major causes of the disease are:
- Sex among workers
- Drug users
- Mothers infected with HIV
