This paper posted on ITFORUM in October 1999 focuses on the description of teaching instructional design based on action learning. The implementation of these ideas are represented in the Immersion program at GMU.
  • Immersion Program - EDIT791 Instructional Design Project Development Practicum Web Support
  • The Immersion Program Web site supports the efforts of students enrolled in two 9-credit courses where they work as a team on an actual instructional design projects.  Assessment of individual student work is completed via a Web-based Portfolio Rubric created by the instructors. The inclusion of Web-based instructional methods often requires alternative assessment methods such as portfolio development. This rubric was designed to promote student engagement in authentic instructional design activities in the Immersion program at GMU. Students implement their portfolios in various ways reflecting on their processes of becoming an instructional designer and integrating their academic experience and prior knowledge to create a representation of their skills and competencies that they can show employers.  An example of a component of a student Web-based portfolio is provided.
