My Experience With This Course

ENGH 375, Web Authoring and Design, is a course that teaches the fundamentals of good website design. The class textbooks, The Elements of User Experience by Jesse James Garrett and HTML & CSS - Design and Build Websites by Jon Duckett, and numerous supplemental resources describe the steps and process to be followed in order to create good website designs.

My ENGH 375 class met on Monday evenings from 4:30 to 7:10. There was quite a wide spectrum of experience among the class members ranging from working professionals in the field to someone who stated that she was happy that she could usually get her computer to turn on. The class was designed so that everyone could progress from his or her individual starting point.

There were two main parts to this class. One part dealt with the methodology of designing websites so that a positive user experience would result. The other part dealt with the technical aspects of coding the website in HTML and CSS. Modules were assigned throughout the course so that elements of both parts could be explored and implemented.

The final project was an operational website designed using the principles covered in the course. One of The highlights of the class was the end-of-year student presentations where each student demonstrated and explained his or her website. It was very interesting to see the various types of content and functionality that were chosen by the members of the class.
