week 7: Songs to Johannes

This week we will start with Loy’s critique of romance and the lyric, as sketched by DuPlessis. We’ll then move to a detailed discussion of “Songs to Johannes” (a.k.a. “Love Songs”). I’ve asked you all to read the essay by DuPlessis. You then must choose one of two essays on “Songs to Johannes,” both in MLWP at the JC Reserve Desk.

REQUIRED READING:

Lost Lunar Baedeker:

From I: Futurism X Feminism: The Circle Squared (Poems 1914-1920):
Re-read: Parturition, At the Door of the House, Three Moments in Paris, The Effectual Marriage, Virgin Plus Curtains Minus Dots

II Songs to Johannes
... in its entirety (& don't forget the notes)

From III Corpses and Geniuses: poems 1919-1930
Poe, Lunar Baedeker

Photocopy from the bookstore:

Rachel Blau DuPlessis. “'Corpses of Poesy': Some Modern Poets and Some Gender Ideologies of Lyric.”

Reading at the JC Reserve Desk: (CHOOSE ONE OF THESE TWO TO READ)

Eric Murphy Selinger. “Love in the Time of Melancholia.” In Mina Loy: Woman & Poet
(hereafter MLWP). Ed. Maeera Shreiber & Keith Tuma. National Poetry Foundation, 1998. 19-44.

Jeffrey Twitchell-Waas. “Little Lusts & Lucidities.” MLWP 111-128.

On Line Reading:

Tichy: Instructor's Notes: Loy: Diction & Syntax in Loy's "Songs to Johannes" & Sexuality in Loy's Poems

Kevin LaCamera & Jennifer Wolkowski. Modernism: Art Salons: Mina Loy’s Lunar Odyssey. http://www.cwru.edu/artsci/engl/VSALM/mod/wolkowski/main.html
Look at the first manuscript page of 1915 "Love Songs," and at the 1923 edition of Lunar Baedeker. This site also has the 1894 Baedeker guide to Paris and Its Environs. While you're there, you may want to look at Loy's artwork, which is required viewing for next week.

RECOMMENDED READING:

1915: The Cultural Moment:
Review “The New Woman & New Sexuality,” especially “Sexuality and Autonomy,” pp 104-105.

Several essays in MLWP are quoted in the notes on "Songs to Johannes" on the Modern American Poetry site, and they also show a few of Loy's paintings. http://www.english.uiuc.edu/maps/poets/g_l/loy/loy.htm
