week 11: "Right down among 'em": Lorine Niedecker and "the folk" I've given you two essays for this week's discussion. Rachel Blau DuPlessis examines "folk" poetry in terms of gender, form, speech, social agency, and anonymity. Middleton's places the idea of "folk poetry" and folk speech in Niedecker in relation to uses of speech and "the people" by William Carlos Williams and the Objectivists. REQUIRED READING: Collected Works: See last week's poems. On Line Reading: Peter Middleton: "Lorine Niedecker's 'Folk Base' and Her Challenge to the American Avant-Garde." http://epc.buffalo.edu/authors/niedecker/bibiography.html Reading at the JC Reserve Desk: Rachel Blau DuPlessis:: "Lorine Niedecker, the Anonymous: Gender, Class, Genre and Resistances," in LNWP p. 113-138. |
