Advances in healthcare artificial intelligence are occurring at a rapid rate and there is a growing discussion about managing its development. Many AI technologies end up being owned and controlled by private parties. The implementation of AI could mean that corporations, clinics, and public bodies will have a greater role in obtaining and protecting patient health information. This raises privacy issues relating to implementation and data security. The volume of data that AI models can maintain is astonishing. Without the proper safeguards and regulatory assurances, AI could pose risks to patient data security and privacy. When it comes to protected health information, covered parties have a responsibility under HIPAA to protect patient data. If someone were to gain access to a patient’s medical records, they could use this to ruin their lives as they see fit. The data that one patient has can obtain previous health conditions, family history, names of family members and sexual partners, illnesses, and much more. In the wrong hands, someone could use this information as blackmail. It is crucial that all parties agree to the proper safeguards and regulatory assurances.
