The Indian Trust Fund Mismanagement - Oil and Gas Royalty Checks

For three months now the Interior Department has not been able to send out gas and oil royalty checks to Native American landowners. The checks were caught up in the long running dispute over alleged mismanagement of the Indian Trust funds system. The federal government has promised to begin cutting royalty checks soon, but the long delay has caused hardship for many on the Navajo reservation who rely on the checks as their main source of income. From member station KNAU, Daniel Kraker reports. (2:52 minutes) Listen

Prototype Description - In the News

"In the News" is the entry point for this module of the course, and to each of the three levels. It allows students to see the importance of their jobs as managers of federal lands and the extent to which individual decisions have on Indian rights and the public. Here, students listen to audio clips from PBS Morning Edition (for demonstration purposes only - FS/BLM could develop their own clips as well) that bring real scenarios to life. They are asked to actively listen, taking note of the topic, areas of controversy, and multiple-perspectives. They are also asked to consider the historical perspective - noting laws and treaties they have studied in the course that may have had a bearing on the particular case. This clip is from Level 3.
