Radiographs can help the dental practitioners to assess and diagnose lots of oral infections, problems, and other related conditions. On the other hand, it is very essential that the dentists weigh the benefits of taking dental radiographs against the risk of exposing patients to X-rays. The effects of X-rays can accumulate from multiple sources over time. Dentists are in the best position to make judgments in the interest of their patients because they know about their patients’ health history and susceptibility to oral disease (American Dental Association, 1995-2009). Digital X-rays had replaced the photographic film with electronic sensor. Digital X-rays had provided somewhat a solution to the problem of so much radiation exposure through the old method with the use of a photographic film.
Although digital radiography offers a variety of benefits, it also has certain disadvantages. One of the disadvantages is that it is more expensive than the traditional film. Another is the sensor dimensions. The CCD, which is the sensor for radiation image, can capture the same amount of information as conventional film. Also in relation to medico legal, the use of digital radiography can possibly lead to the ability to manipulate the images for fraudulent purposes (Journal of Orthodontics, 2002).
