Lessons learned in this unit would definitely
start with the powerful concept of having students work on an
authentic project. From the first, some students admitted their
intimidation at having an outside professional judge their work.
That was a good thing in that they realized that this assignment
was being done for a realistic, professional audience, not just
another thing to hand in to the teacher. In a real advertising
situation, the "winner" would be granted the contract for that
company's advertising which translates into profit for the
company and employess. In this instance, the winners received
tee shirts from the school store. I am not sure there would be
anything I could afford that students would admit to being really
excited about competing for. However, there was great excitement
when students read the email from Mr. Green complimenting their
work. This added to the suspense of which ad might be chosen.
Although the tee shirts were a tangible prize, I think the
prestige of being selected by an advertising professional was
worth a great deal to the students. One group in particular was
made up of two students that do not get many accolades in school
otherwise. Their excitement on being announced winners was
obvious. I was excited for them.
