Some of my most influential memories and life lessons
came from the Sunday dinners we had after the church sermons. The conversations
were always so lively because we were either critiquing what they preacher had
said or laughing at what the Deccan’s wife wore. None of us meant any harm, it was just good
honest fun, but I learned so much about free thinking during these dinners.
Growing up in Virginia, I felt that there was the unspoken rule of “children
should be seen not heard” hovering around me. However, whenever we were eating
at the dinner table in Louisiana, I was allowed to say what I thought and felt
that it was actually heard. Just being heard, helped me develop a confidence in
my own way of thinking because my ideas and opinions seemed like they mattered
for once. I was not just a child who did not understand the world, but an
actual person who could think for herself.
