Once you have a project in mind, do some research into both websites that you enjoy using yourself, and websites that have a similar focus to that of your proposed site. It’s okay to steal ideas, just be sure to put your own twist on the idea.

Look for what you enjoy using rather than the sites that have your favorite content. The goal here is to find a layout that compliments your goal, so finding a site that is enjoyable to interact with is key.
