Academic Overview

Rebecca Kanak Fox, Ph.D., is the Assistant Director of the Advanced Studies in Teaching and Learning Program and Assistant Professor in the Center for Language and Culture and in the College of Education and Human Development (CEHD) at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia. Bilingual in French, Dr. Fox holds a Ph.D. in Education with a specialization in Foreign/Second Language Education and Second Language Acquisition Research from George Mason University, Fairfax, VA. She received her master’s degree “with distinction” in French literature from George Mason University.

Prior to coming to CEHD at George Mason University, her teaching experiences included teaching all levels of French in grades K - university and English to adult English language learners. Currently in her seventh year at GMU, Dr. Fox has primary affiliation with two CEHD programs. She directs and teaches classes in the Advanced Studies in Teaching and Learning Program, an advanced master’s degree program aligned with the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. She also teaches courses in Bilingualism and Language Acquisition Research, Foreign/World Language Methods, culture, and action research. She regularly mentors and works with doctoral students and is actively involved in ongoing research with teachers in the P-12 setting.

Dr. Fox has several research foci. Programmatic portfolio development and implementation, portfolio utilization for performance assessment, connections to program learning outcomes, and program evaluation reflect over ten years of extended research. In foreign/second language acquisition, Dr. Fox conducts research on the language acquisition of adolescents with interrupted schooling and on the use of technology for effective learning in the foreign/second language classroom. Dr. Fox’s research and scholarship includes numerous presentations, book chapters, research and journal articles and reports.

She is actively involved in the wider professional community and also serves as a member of several organizations in the local, regional, national, and international communities. She regularly presents research at their professional conferences and is a leader in several Special Interest Groups.

On the personal front, she and her engineer husband Bill have two sons, Will and Tyler, who are in the field of science, physics and marine biology respectively. They enjoy travel a great deal, and while France is a country always dear to their hearts, some of their recent trips have taken them to China, Nepal, Australia and New Zealand, and countries in western and eastern Europe. Becky is an avid gardener and enjoys cooking, running, and music.
