Iconic Scottish Movies

Everyone right now is probably rolling their eyes right now for the fact that there is a GIF of Braveheart right at the top of the movie page. Am I right? Well... even though Braveheart is completely overused to exemplify what a Scottish movie is I shamefully have to add it to the list of Iconic Scottish movies.

  1. Braveheart, 1995
    Braveheart
It may be the most cliche Scottish movie of all time, but does that mean that we stop loving every second of it? No. The move tells the story of the legendary thirteenth century Scottish hero named William Wallace (Mel Gibson). Wallace rallies the Scottish against the English monarch and Edward I (Peter Hanly) after he suffers a personal tragedy by English soldiers. Wallace gathers a group of amateur warriors that is stronger than any English army.
  2. Highlander, 1986
    Highlander
When the mystical Russell Nash (Christopher Lambert) kills a man in a sword fight in a New York City parking lot, he leaves a sliver of an ancient weapon lodged in a car in the process. After brilliant forensics specialist Brenda Wyatt (Roxanne Hart) recovers evidence of the mysterious weapon, she and her partner, Lt. Frank Moran (Alan North), embark on an investigation Of Nash that will land them in the middle of a dangerous, centuries-old feud between powerful immortals.
  3. Sweet Sixteen, 2002
    Sweet Sixteen
In this gritty tale, Ken Loach offers an alternative take on growing up working class in Scotland’s largest city. With over 330 swear words and subtitles for those not familiar with a thick Glaswegian accent, Loach attempts to offer a more honest approach to Scotland’s social ills depicting typical juvenile delinquent Liam and his strained attempts at creating a better life for himself and his mother. The young cast is primarily made up of amateur actors, most who had never acted before from deprived areas in which the film was set. Loach manages to get the best from his actors here, although sometimes it’s difficult to tell whether they are acting or are simply being themselves.
  4. Macbeth, 2015
    Macbeth
The early 1971 rendention of this iconic play will forever be known in our hearts especially after watching it in our high school english class. This 2015 rendention catches our eye through modern grafics. Macbeth, the Thane of Glamis, receives a prophecy from a trio of witches that one day he will become King of Scotland. Consumed by ambition and spurred to action by his wife, Macbeth murders his king and takes the throne for himself.
