Conceptual Framework

The kayak in this framework represents leadership iconleadership. The ying yang symbol represents a balance between skills (assistive technology iconassistive technology) and policy iconpolicy. The kayak is the vehicle of action and moves freely through the water so long as it remains balanced. When it is off balance, either through lack of skills or ineffective policies, the journey becomes more challenging and at times may feel impossible. If educators and policy makers can work together to maintain the balance more people with disabilities will reach their full potential. My scholarly, professional and personal experiences have continued to move me toward this ultimate goal. Not to guide people to what I think they should or could do, but to help to provide an environment for them to move freely as they find their own way.

The symbols shown below will be used throughout the narrative to highlight the integration of the three major areas of focus in my program.

Policy

I use the word policy broadly to represent laws, regulations, rules and procedures, enacted to provide people with disabilities the ability to participate in life's activities. Much of my coursework and professional experiences have been focused on understanding federal and local policies and how they are developed and influenced.  I have a strong interest in understanding what factors help to make policies effective. This section of my portfolio will highlight some of my growth in this area.

Assistive Technology (skills)

I use Assistive technology to represent the acquired or potential skills of a person with a disability. People with disabilities often need to use assistive technology to accomplish daily living skills, like dressing or eating. In this way, it may be considered a lifesaver. Assistive technology can be used to acquire and improve skills. Much of my professional life has been focused on providing educators and people with disabilities access to, and training on the appropriate use of assistive technology. This section of my portfolio will demonstrate how my knowledge of assistive technology has been integrated into my coursework and professional experiences

Leadership

I have worked to become a leader in the disability community through my scholarly work, professional and personal experiences as a person with a disability. This section of my portfolio will show some key areas where I have demonstrated or developed leadership qualities.
