The Great Shoe-Leather Tour

Source provided by Poynter Online

Great shoe-letter is often an example used by journalism professors to discuss how important quality can be. The fact is that leather is timeless because it is durable and comes in a variety of styles. This analogy is applied to journalism students because we need to be excellent writers. We have to accommodate the fast pace of the technology era but also remain strong verbally in case the power goes out.

“Even when you think you have everything prepared ahead of time, you may still have to resort to a back-up plan.”

As a journalist, you have to meet people face-to-face. Although technology is awesome, make sure that you’re not hiding behind your iPod, cell phone or computer.

Quick Tips:

  • Decide who your audience will be and how many.
  • Do your research by understanding your deadlines.
  • Try to promote yourself by noting awards
  • Keep a large quantity of stationary and photocopy your clips.
  • Act professional because you are representing the newspaper.

There will be times when you’ll be reporting a story while another story breaks right in front of you. Get out there and be an aware citizen that documents history.
