Implications of Overclocking

Because of the rise in popularity of overclocking over the years in order to extend the lifespan PC gaming components, manufacturers have started to include more components in their systems that are “overclock friendly.” Many companies have risen that especially cater to the needs of the overclocker (nVidia, evga, etc.), and actually sell factory-overclocked versions of their products (at remarkably higher prices, it really isn’t worth it) for people that are less technologically inclined, but that still want the very best. Recently, a game was released that had such high hardware demands that the technology did not yet exist that could effectively play it, and so it could only be enjoyed by consumers with already high-tech systems who were also fans of overclocking (the technological “upper crust,” truly). If this trend continues, I believe that there will be an ever-growing divide between high-end PC gamers and casual console gamers that aren’t willing to spend the cash that having the best requires. Ultimately, it may even drastically decrease the number of people who are interested in any type of modern gaming, but this is my own opinion.
