Welcome to Web Authoring and Design

English 375/507 provides students with the foundation of skills needed to enter the complex but increasingly relevant world of web design. Through scheduled assignments called modules, students will practice basic skills which will increase in complexity. By the end of the course, students will have created their own website to serve their own needs. Students can choose to redesign an existing website or create an entirely new one with whatever content they choose. A popular website choice is the creation of a resume website, where students showcase their own work experience and talents. While this may seem daunting at first - especially to an English major - the entire semester is spent not only learning these skills but learning to analyze websites by scrutinizing their design choices. This class gives students the ability to understand a website's ultimate purpose by examining choices such as font, color scheme, background images, etc. These lessons give students the knowledge to create their own website and fulfill their own purposes, whatever they may be, in an efficient and tasteful manner.

Where rhetoric comes in: It's important to remember that design choices affect how a user experiences your site. Stylistic choices such as font size and color will determine whether your intended audience will want to come back to your site or not. If you're designing a child friendly site, bright colors and fun fonts are acceptable. But if you're designing a site intended for serious use, it may be best to keep it as simple and basic as possible. Fonts must be readable and colors should not clash obnoxiously. The design aspect mostly comes in with CSS, where you can experiment with different style choices, while not affecting the HTML document. So to start and keep it simple: think of HTML as your content, and CSS as how you present it.
