Welcome!

Congratulations! You have passed the middle school level of Hindi language learning and you are now ready to plan a trip to India by using the language skills you have learned so far.Your task this semester will be to follow the scenarios and justify all decisions you will make about how long you are going to stay in India, which are the places you are going to visit, what kind of people you would like to see and a lot more. You will find it motivating and rewarding by solving the problems presented in each scenario and extensively using the rich resources given about Indian language, history, culture, cuisines etc. You will not only learn and use the language, you will also probe into so much more related to the language.

You will be given embedded data and resources, where you and your group can find further information. You will be required to publish a journal on a weekly basis. This will be evaluated by your peers according to a rubric designed for this purpose. You will also be required to post reflections or be part of online asynchronous discussions. The telementor will provide links or resources to get in touch with Indian travel agents. You and your group members will be required to speak or write in Hindi while communicating with Indian travel agents. The instructor will be around to assist you but you and your group will be responsible for finding information and making all the justifications for this trip to India.

You will be expected to:

  • Work collaboratively in groups of four to work out plans and itineray together.
  • Use target language-Hindi to conduct all activities following the given situations/ scenarios.
  • Browse related hyperlinked Indian websites, use tools like dictionary, currency calculator etc., call or fax or contact travel agencies or Indian friends, and to interact and articulate with peers.
  • Follow your own path to solve problems.
  • Publish weekly journals by recording discussions, dialogues and subsequent decision making.
  • Report and elaborate on decisions made either orally in class or share with each other electronically.
  • Evaluate each other with an Evaluation Rubric.
  • Make field trips to local Indian travel agencies.

The following will be the basic scenarios around which problems are given for students to solve:

  • Justify budget and time.
  • Justify cities and places to visit.
  • Justify hotels to stay.
  • Justify what cuisine-style restaurants they will eat at.
  • Justify cultural activities that they would like to participate while they are in India.
  • Justify Indian holidays that they would like to experience.
  • Justify people to visit.
  • Justify cultural norms that they will follow.
  • Present final plans and itineray for evaluation in class.

Your Learning outcomes:

  • Become more comfortable in spontaneously interacting with native Indian-speakers.
  • Build collaborative skills with peers.
  • Identify and use cultural, historical and other resources to learn about India.
  • Enhanced understanding of the Indian culture.
  • Become more independent in planning a trip, especially to India.
