Population: 80 million

Language and Culture

About 53% of the people of Iran use the official language of Iran which is Persian. Additionally, Azeri, Turkic and Arabic are spoken in different areas of Iran.  Other languages include Kurdish, Gilaki and Mazandarani, Luri and Balochi (“ CIA - The World Factbook,” 2013).

Similar to the language most dominate ethnic group is Persian, which makes up 61% of the Iranian population. Other ethnic groups include Azeri that makes up 16%, Kurd 10%, Lur 6%, Baloch 2%, Arab 2%, and Turkmen and Turkic tribes 2% of the population (“CIA - The World Factbook,” 2013).

Religion

Islam is the dominant and official religion of Iran with about 98% of the people practicing Islam. The remaining 2% includes Zoroastrian, Jewish, Christian, and Baha'i. There are variations of Islam in Iran of which 89% of the Muslims are Shia Muslim, and 9% are Sunni Muslim. Since Muslim makes up majority of the population of Iran their culture and government are greatly influenced by Muslim beliefs (“CIA - The World Factbook,” 2011).

Geography

Location: Iran is bordered by Azerbaijan, Armenia, and Turkmenistan from the north, Pakistan and Afghanistan from the east, Iraq and Turkey from the west (“CIA - The World Factbook,” 2013).

Size:Iran is the 18th largest country in the world spreading about 1,648,195 sq km of which 1,531,595 sq km of land and 116,600 sq km of water. Compare to other countries Iran is the combined size of France, Spain, Germany and United Kingdom (“ CIA - The World Factbook,” 2013).

Georgraphy: Iran is populated with mountains and deserts, which makes it ideal for natural resources.  Iran has abounded sources of natural resources including petroleum, natural gas, coal, chromium, copper, iron ore, lead, manganese, zinc and sulfur (“CIA - The World Factbook,” 2013)
