Advantages of Internet Security
Although the Internet is full of security risk, it is also used to protect our nation. Through the Internet the government can monitor activity and help crack down on crime. Social websites such as Myspace, Facebook, and Twitter, have been used to stop crimes from occurring. Some companies can even use these social sites to look up the potential hires private life. Some may agree that this is an invasion of privacy, while others agree it's a way to protect the company from hiring a risky employee. The September 11 terrorist attacks lead to the passage of the Patriot Act, which allows law enforcement to tap telephone lines and track internet users. So, even though the technological advances are more becoming, citizens must give up their privacy for the better of the American people. Just before 2001, "in 1997, the Court struck down the highly controversial federal Communication Decency Act of 1996, which had imposed penalties for creating, transmitting, or receiving obscene material on the Internet. The court ruled that 'the interest in encouraging freedom of expression in a democratic society outweighs any theoretical but unproven benefit of censorship"(Beebe, 2009, p.48) Although the Patriot Act is now in place, there are still internet invasions. Terrorists even use the internet to display messages and gain followers. How could anyone stop a terrorist from getting access to the Internet?
