Conceptual Framework: The pictures above were both taken in July 2008 on Skellig Michael, Ireland, and represent my conceptual framework for my doctoral program. Skellig Michael is a 12th century monastic historic site that one travels out to by taking a small, 12-person boat out 15 nautical miles in the Atlantic Ocean. The water is often choppy and the daily weather determines if boats will make the trip to this monument. My husband and I learned this firsthand in July 2006 when we first tried to visit Skellig Michael. Ireland's rainy weather and rough water prevented the trip at that time but more favorable conditions made the trip possible in 2008.   To get to the top of Skellig Michael, one must climb 660 stone steps. To me, this climb was as tough and as rewarding as my doctoral program proves to be with each course and semester of work completed. The second photograph above, is a view from the top of Skellig Michael, looking out from a window of an ancient stone cathedral towards the sea and another formation called Little Skellig. I consider the photograph the representation of the completion of the trip up those 660 stone stairs and a moment when I could stop and enjoy the view from the top. This is what I look forward to when I complete my final coursework, my dissertation, and then receive my doctoral degree. That cathedral window and the view from it is my goal.
