According to the US Computed Tomography (CT) Systems Market, the number of CT scans will continue to increase in the next few years. The market was valued $1.2 billion in 2008 and is predicted to grow by 2.5% annually for the next seven years, reaching about $1.4 billion by 2015. They believe that the growth would be mainly due to the growing utilization of CT systems in the diagnosis of a lot more diseases, especially the cardiovascular diagnosis. Multi Slice CT Systems are expected to increase more than Single Slice CT Systems because they are faster and can capture different images at the same time. In cardiac imaging, the most recent CT systems can scan large volumes in a very short time with a speed of faster than a heartbeat (Bharat Book Bureau, 2010).
Due to the high radiation the patients are exposed to during the procedure of CT scan, researchers are working to decrease the amount of exposure to radiation during CT coronary angiography. According to a published study, “researchers were able to determine that a lower voltage which reduced the radiation was still able to produce images of similar quality as those produced by high voltage CT angiograph” (Suite 101, 2009).
