Potential Benefits

Though there may be some drawbacks, the benefits of online journalism are ten fold. Foremost, it is a much ?more interactive news experience.? (Sidiya, 2009) One can look through the website and decide which topic they are interested in browsing, watch live news coverage, as well as view archived articles, something that is not at all possible with a print newspaper. Online journalism allows for much more information to be accessible at a constant rate. News updates are almost instantaneous; there is no need to wait until the next day?s newspaper to come out. We have entered in to a very fast paced world, and because of this people are at a constant need to know what is going on in current events now, not tomorrow. This need to constantly know what is going on in the news has been particularly accelerated with the rise of smartphones. These devices allow constant access to the internet. ?We put up with taking longer to get information for one reason: because we had to.? (Rosenwald, 2010) Now, people can find out what the breaking news is whether they are in their cars, out to dinner or even in a meeting. Due to constant access to the internet, people are regularly being fed information. ?Newspapers find launching online is cheaper than launching in print.? (Sidiya, 2009) This is due to a number of factors such as not having to deliver newspapers and not having to pay for materials such as paper and a printing press. Many news sources are turning solely to the internet as their form of publication. ?There are over thirty Saudi online newspapers, compared to just thirteen print newspapers.? (Sidiya, 2009) Not only are more people attaining their knowledge of the news via the Internet, but also it is not cost efficient to print newspapers for many news outlets. The Internet is a much more cost friendly way to launch a newspaper.
