Below are examples of both video editorials and editorial cartoons. Students used their written editorial as scripts for their video editorials. Part of their video editorial assignment was to include at least 5 images in appropriate places. Use of titles or music was optional.

The cartoonist explained that this was outer space and the circular object represented a black hole. Once he explained that, the cartoon made a great deal of sense in that he was expressing that the U.S. was being sucked into a black hole with all the uprisings is various countries of the Middle East.
As this assignment coincided with the uprising in Egypt, I received many cartoons dealing with Mubarak. This one was very clear in that the people were giving the president "the boot." I liked too the pyramid in the corner to remind the reader of Egypt.
As it seemed at the time that several Middle Eastern countries would break into democracy, this cartoonist wanted to explain that other countries were invited to join the democratic celebration in that there was enough "cake" for everyone.
This cartoonist succintly says that texting and driving do not mix.
This cartoonist used many items as symbols in the overall picture. President Obama is the golfer. He is using golf clubs, a symbol of Democrats, to hit a golf ball, a symbol of Republicans toward the hole whose flag reads Healthcare Reform. In the sky is a wind, another symbol of Republicans, ready to blow the golf ball back out of the hole. The overall title is "A Long Shot...." I loved the amount of creative and higher order thinking that the student put into this. He had to understand the complex issues of the battle in Congress over healthcare reform as well as the game of golf. He then tied those two together in a great product.
This is a very cute and clever cartoon that quickly expresses the concept of Global Warming.
