Who I Am

I'm Andres Valbuena, a game designer and narrative designer focused on crafting engaging mechanics, immersive worlds, and player-driven storytelling. Whether it’s designing gameplay systems or developing branching narratives, I’m passionate about creating experiences that feel meaningful and responsive to player choice.

Recognition

I was honored with Gold status in the 2025 GDC Game Narrative Review competition for my paper on Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines (2004). My submission explored the game’s integration of clan-based identity with player agency, environmental storytelling, and thematic coherence—positioning it as a landmark case study in narrative design. This recognition affirmed my commitment to deep, systems-aware storytelling and remains a highlight of my narrative design journey.

What Drives Me

My journey started in the modding community, where I contributed to total conversion mods like Fallout: Cascadia for Fallout 4 and Old World Blues for Hearts of Iron IV. Writing for these large-scale projects helped me understand the power of narrative depth, player agency, and worldbuilding in interactive spaces.

Beyond modding, I’ve worked on original games such as Gelatoss! and MSF: Mason Salvation Force, where I’ve taken on roles in game design, mechanics implementation, and narrative structure. I enjoy projects where gameplay and storytelling work together to create something truly memorable.

My Approach to Game Design

  • Player Experience First – Every system and story element should serve the player’s immersion and engagement.
  • Iteration is Key – The best design comes from testing, refining, and evolving ideas based on feedback.
  • Story & Systems Should Work Together – The most impactful narratives emerge when game mechanics reinforce storytelling.

What I’m Looking For

I’m seeking opportunities where I can contribute as a game designer, narrative designer, or level designer in game studios, indie teams, and creative projects. My ideal role blends storytelling, gameplay design, and player interaction into one cohesive experience.
