Drop-in hours

My drop-in hours are by appointment only in Exploratory Hall Room 4311 (the Mathematical Sciences Department GTA workrooms) or by appointment. College is hard, and math in college is even harder. If you feel like you're struggling, please stop by — we can discuss your coursework (even from other classes), class schedule, career plans, and whatever else you might want to chat about. If you can't make my drop-in hours, you can schedule an appointment with me.

Teaching

My teaching style is a "get your hands dirty" one: rote drill-and-kill problem-solving doesn't make us better mathematicians, but messing around and being creative do. My past course handouts and problem sets, alongside their source \(\TeX\), are available online. In Spring 2023, I received the GMU College of Science Dean's Excellence in Graduate Teaching award.

Mason Experimental Geometry Lab

The Mason Experimental Geometry Lab (MEGL) is Mason's mathematics research incubator. Here, faculty and students of all levels collaborate on research projects, taking advantage of the Lab's advanced computing toolset. This academic year, I mentored two undergraduate student researchers on the Quantum Monte Carlo and Las Vegas Algorithms project, supervised by Dr. Michael Jarret. With specific congratulations to Mark Dubynski and Raghu Guggilam, we won Best Poster at the Fall 2023 MEGL Symposium.

PhD LaunchPad Program

The PhD LaunchPad Program is a three-week transitional learning experience for incoming doctoral and Masters students. The Program comprises two seven-day courses plus a field trip, and is designed to:

  • refresh students' knowledge in algebra and analysis;
  • detail what knowledge they are expected to have in their first year of graduate study at Mason;
  • preview material that's expected to be covered in Algebra (MATH:621) and Linear Analysis (MATH:675), the typical fall-semester prelim courses;
  • help students familiarize themselves with Mason's Fairfax campus, campus resources, the math department and its organization, and the structure of the PhD program;
  • feel more comfortable living in the DC metro area.
The course runs from July 24th to August 11th, 2023 at George Mason's Fairfax campus.
