Bird Diary
Bird Feeders
Its winter and its time for Wild Birds Feeder Watch session ( Cornell Project Feederwatch ). In fall, there is a frenzy among birds to prepare for winter and winter migration. Migratory birds feed to increase fat which will help them in their long arduous journey while non-migratory birds store food to help survive through winter. For instance, Chickadees, White Breasted Nuthatches, Titmice, Downy woodpecker and Hairy woodpecker.I am fortunate to live in an apartment facing woods. This has led to abundance of wild life which includes birds, squirrels ( Eastern gray squirrel, Eastern chipmunks and Southern flying squirrel) fox, hares, spiders, mosquitoes and various other insects ( Photostream ).
Over the past 1 year I have steadily increased bird feeders to accommodate a wide variety of birds. Having started with 1 hopper feeder in October 2009 i now have 3 hopper feeders, 1 tube feeder, 2 suet feeders, 3 platform feeders, 2 thistle feeders and 1 hummingbird feeder spread out in the patio and on a feeder station ( Lowes Garden Treasures Black Bird Feeder Station ). Through summer I placed only 1 hopper feeder and platform feeder along with a bird bath. With fall almost here, i have now included homemade suet with vegetable margarine instead of animal fat ( Recipe ) along with a pine cone smeared with peanut butter. Peanut butter cone is known to be largely a favourite of Chickadee, but surprisingly Northern Cardinal and Catbird also seem to have a liking for it.
