Every production needs to manage the its footage precisely. The camera
crew looks after the tapes until they are copied for the director.
The camera crew organizes the copying of the tapes and their transfer
to the editors. Thereafter, the editor(s) are responsible
for the safe-keeping of all the production's footage. Here's the process
Master Tape Log
The camera crew labels and numbers each tape, and enters it on the Master
Tape Log Sheet. This log sheet records exactly what was shot on each
tape, when it was copied for the director, and when it was passed on
to the editors. The master log helps the directors and editors find
specific tapes quickly, and also minimizes the risk of losing tapes.
The camera crew fills in each column as each individual
shoot is processed. The master log sheet looks like this:-
Tape # |
Description of Contents |
Copied |
To Editors |
#1 |

#2 |
Navy yard, scenes 12 -14 |

Copies of the updated Master Log go to the producers, the directors,
the editors, the instructors and to the production file. Use the print
version. (Prints best in Netscape)
Individual Tape Log Sheet
Every tape also has its own log sheet. This sheet records in detail
the number of each take on that tape, its position on the tape, a brief
content description and a note on whether the take was good or not.
This tape helps the directors select the best shots for the edit by
saving them from looking at takes spoiled by ambient sound, fluffed
lines etc. It also allows the editors to pinpoint easily the precise
takes requested by the directors. The individual log sheet looks like
this:
Tape #1 |
