The National Archives

The National Archives and Record Administration (NARA) preserves documents and makes many accessible to the public. They allow people to do things such as: look up family histories through documents; view important historical documents such as the Constitution; and research information on new documents they possess and are allowing the public to view. The National Archives and Record Administration created the Electronic Records Archives (ERA) to help the public access information easier from their computers, without having to physically go through a filing system and touch documents. The Electronic Records Archives is an innovative way "to manage the lifecycle of all types of Federal records and to capture, preserve, and provide access to electronic records- free from dependence on any specific hardware or software- to ensure these important records are preserved forever." (www.archives.gov-records mgmt). The National Archives is composed of a few different information sources such as the Electronic Records Archives and offices such as the Information Security Oversight Office (ISOO,) which was created in 1978 by Jimmy Carter to replace the Interagency Classification Review Committee (IRC).
