Leadership
and Conceptual Analysis |

"Knowledge
is a lesser requirement to leading others than power and authority."
EDUC
802, Leadership Seminar (Fall 2005)
|
This
essay demonstrates tools of conceptual analysis providing clear
definitions of terms, and model, contrary, and/or borderline cases
to make the case.
It addresses the provided above assertion. This is an attempt to
apply skills learned from Wilson's Thinking with Concepts
used to improved communication and understanding.

The
Most Essential Attributes of a Leader |

Final
paper
EDUC 802, Leadership Seminar (Fall 2005)
|
This
final paper reveals where I am as a leader upon entering this program.
In this paper I identify the most essential attributes of a leader,
provide explanations why I consider them the most essential, and then
reflect on them and estimate where I am and what I will need to learn
during the program to make them more useful to me. In order to determine
the most essential attributes of a leader I attempted to find convergences
between 5 different approaches to leadership.

This
final product is the segment of the prototype, training manual,
of the instructional
module on selecting an appropriate switch for a students with
disabilities depending on his/her reliable body parts (Module 3
from the mentioned
above Design Document.) In this manual you can
find the elements of instructional approach and strategies. It
also demonstrates appropriate sequencing and message design. It
was designed
based on the information described in the Design Document, e.g.,
Needs Assessment, Learner Analysis, etc. |

Supplementary handout
EDIT 705, Instructional Design (Fall 2005) |
|
This
Job Aid was developed in order to provide learners with some guide
that they could use after the training is complete when they go back
to their work places. Job Aid consists of a set of index cards
with the information about different switches for different body
parts including the vendor information. |
Assistive
Technology for Infants and Young Children |

Research
Paper,
Master's Program, East Carolina University, Spring 2002
SPED
6204 "Advanced Methods in Mental Retardation"
|
This
research paper provides an overview of available assistive technology
for infants and young children. It was found that assistive technology
plays a key role in enabling infants and young children to develop
the skills they need to learn and grow. Early assistive technology
devices and services include switches, augmentative alternative communication
devices, and assistive technologies for mobility, microcomputers, and
adaptation of play materials. The description of what kind of assistive
technology may be used for infants and young children with specific
examples is included. |
Cultural
Barriers to Assistive Technology |

Literature
Review, Master's Program, East Carolina University, Fall 2002
SPED
6701 "Assistive Technology Devices and Services"
|
This
is a literature review about the cultural barriers to using Assistive
Technology. The cultural background of AT users (and of the people who
surround them) has much to do with the success or failure of attempted
AT interventions. The user must always be the primary focus - but aspects
of his or her native culture, language, beliefs, and customs as they
relate to the person directly, and to the family or larger community
in general, must be taken into account. This paper also offers the reflection/speculation
on how cultural background of somebody from Russia could impact the use
of AT devices. |

AT
refers to a very broad range of devices, services, strategies, and
practices
to assist the problems encountered by persons
with disabilities. The Individuals with Disabilities
Educational Act Amendments of 1991 (IDEA) defined an assistive technology
device as, “any item, piece of equipment, or product system,
whether acquired commercially, off the shelf, modified, or customized,
that is used to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities
of a person with disabilities”. AT service is defined as “any
service that directly assists an individual with a disability in the
selection, acquisition or use of an assistive technology device.” Examples:
evaluating needs and skills of AT; acquiring AT; selecting, designing,
repairing, and fabricating AT systems; coordinating services with other
therapies; training for both individual with a disability and those
working with the individual.
Assistive Technology can assist in learning, make the environment more
accessible, provide access to the workplace or school, enhance independence,
improve the quality of life of the individual with disabilities. This
paper will present the overview of available assistive technology
devices for students with disabilities. |

The
Interactive CD-Rom "Assistive Technology for Students with Learning
Disabilities" is available in two languages: English and Russian. Section
1 provides essential information (literature review) about the phenomenon
of assistive technology for students with LD. Sections 2-6 give you
the opportunity to learn about 5 different types of assistive technology
for student with learning disabilities:
word processing,
word recognition, speech feedback, speech recognition,
and concept mapping. In each section you will find introduction
to that particular type of assistive technology; the list of technologies
available now; interviews with teachers (5 different teachers) and
the samples of using the technologies in the classroom (e.g., lesson
plans or student’s work samples). In the section “Tips
for Parents” you will find the information useful for parents
who want to use assistive technology for their child but don’t
know where to start. The section “Resources” consists of
references and web site links containing information on assistive technology.

Providing
Access to the General Education Curriculum for Students with
Disabilities: Tensions Posed by Democratically
Based System of Education (PDF File Only) |

Proceedings
of the Democracy and Education Conference
(141-150). Kiev, Ukraine June 1-2, 2001

The
challenge for educators and policy maters of the 21st century is to provide
students
with disabilities meaningful access to instruction that is aligned with
high-level standards and supported by special education interventions.
Enhancing access to general education curriculum requires a new approach
to collaboration between general and special education. this paper offers
an overview of the critical issues facing educators and policy makers
in the New Independent States as well as the United States. Included
in this presentation will be a review of legislation, litigation, and
regulations that facilitate or hinder the ability of students to access
the general education curriculum. |
