The Most Essential Attributes of a Leader

Final paper
EDUC 802, Leadership Seminar (Fall 2005)

This final paper reveals where I am as a leader upon entering this program. In this paper I identify the most essential attributes of a leader, provide explanations why I consider them the most essential, and then reflect on them and estimate where I am and what I will need to learn during the program to make them more useful to me. In order to determine the most essential attributes of a leader I attempted to find convergences between 5 different approaches to leadership.

Assistive Technology for Infants and Young Children

Research Paper, Master's Program, East Carolina University, Spring 2002
SPED 6204 "Advanced Methods in Mental Retardation"

This research paper provides an overview of available assistive technology for infants and young children. It was found that assistive technology plays a key role in enabling infants and young children to develop the skills they need to learn and grow. Early assistive technology devices and services include switches, augmentative alternative communication devices, and assistive technologies for mobility, microcomputers, and adaptation of play materials. The description of what kind of assistive technology may be used for infants and young children with specific examples is included.

Cultural Barriers to Assistive Technology

Literature Review, Master's Program, East Carolina University, Fall 2002
SPED 6701 "Assistive Technology Devices and Services"

This is a literature review about the cultural barriers to using Assistive Technology. The cultural background of AT users (and of the people who surround them) has much to do with the success or failure of attempted AT interventions. The user must always be the primary focus - but aspects of his or her native culture, language, beliefs, and customs as they relate to the person directly, and to the family or larger community in general, must be taken into account. This paper also offers the reflection/speculation on how cultural background of somebody from Russia could impact the use of AT devices.

Assistive Technology for Students with Disabilities (PDF File Only)

Proceedings of the Global Partnership for Democratic Future Conference (228-235). Saratov, Russia, May 16-19, 2003

AT refers to a very broad range of devices, services, strategies, and practices to assist the problems encountered by persons with disabilities. The Individuals with Disabilities Educational Act Amendments of 1991 (IDEA) defined an assistive technology device as, “any item, piece of equipment, or product system, whether acquired commercially, off the shelf, modified, or customized, that is used to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of a person with disabilities”. AT service is defined as “any service that directly assists an individual with a disability in the selection, acquisition or use of an assistive technology device.” Examples: evaluating needs and skills of AT; acquiring AT; selecting, designing, repairing, and fabricating AT systems; coordinating services with other therapies; training for both individual with a disability and those working with the individual. Assistive Technology can assist in learning, make the environment more accessible, provide access to the workplace or school, enhance independence, improve the quality of life of the individual with disabilities. This paper will present the overview of available assistive technology devices for students with disabilities.
