Blogging for Research

You might want to consider using your blog to post your ongoing research for research projects. You can insert links to online sources and keep a running list of sources (plus all of the source information) so you can retrieve it again, if necessary.

Blog "steps"

Unlike "traditional" email messages or IM messages, to post on a blogger requires taking extra steps - going to the Web address, signing in, posting the blog entry, then selecting Post/Publish. Although more steps are required than email, the steps required are much less complex than publishing material on a web site in the more "traditional" way we create and publish web pages.

The blog is posted on the Web in a preordained format in which the structure is already there. The one who posts to a blog just has to type in the text and select publish. If the file transfer protocol (ftp) is set up properly, the information automatically appears on the Web blog.

To read blog, the reader has to know the blog Web address.

Using blogging for group work

Many Internet users are now familiar with blogs, to some extent. If they haven't created their own, they may have run across blogs while doing searches.

Most people think of them as narcissistic diary writing, about everything from my favorite hobbies to "what I terrible day I had," posted on the Web for all to see.

Blogging facilitates interactive communication and can archive the meeing notes and discussions. Members of the group blog can also link to relevant information on web sites.

An article which discusses this phenomenon is Is your company or group Blogging yet?,
by Todd Stauffer, on Publish.com

You might want to consider using blogging for collaborataive meetings.

You would not have to publish the blogging address for the world to see. However, if it is on the Web, someone will be able to find it, whether or not you add a link to a Web site.

Remember, as with any public space on the Internet, anyone can see what you post. So be cautious about the kinds of information you post.

What is a "blog"?

A blog is information that is instantly published to a Web site. Blog scripting allows someone to automatically post information to a Web site. The information first goes to a blogger Web site. Then the information is automatically inserted into a template tailored for your Web site.

After I created this blog, which resides on my mason server account, I linked the address to my home page, so I and anyone else who wants to can read my blog.

Remember that a blog resides in a public medium. Anyone who has access to the Internet and who can find your blog can read your information. Posting private information about yourself could result in identity theft or other bad results.

Posting private information about others can also have serious consequences. Think before you publish

Here are some blogging resources I have posted online.
