The Five Planes

The Scope Plane

The scope plane figures out how to satisfy the strategy plane. This plane is valuable because it forces you to address potential conflicts and difficulties in the product before the product is even formed. It's important to define the requirements in this plane so that the product meets the objectives established in the strategy plane.

According to Garrett, there are two main reasons for defining requirements:

  • So you know what you're building
  • By clearly establishing what the product is meant to do, everyone will know what the project's goals are and when they've been completed. Without a clear line of requirements, the end goal of the product can be lost in the making.

  • So you know what you're not building
  • Having a clearly identified list of requirements ensures that unnecessary changes are not being added.
