ABOUT THE CURATORS AND SPONSORS OF THE EXHIBITION

This on-line exhibit is based on an actual exhibition that showed in the George Mason University Johnson Center Art Gallery in January thru February 2005. Curated by Ms. Phyllis Slade Martin and Dr. Wendi Manuel Scott, the original exhibition titled, "Separate and Unequal in Buckingham County: Segregation and Desegregation in Virginia," was funded by the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities and Public Policy, and George Mason University.

The exhibition would not have been possible without the participation of the Buckingham County African American community. Special thanks goes to the Buckingham County Training School Commemoration, Inc. and the Buckingham County Chapter of the Afro-American Life and History Society. Under the leadership of Ms. Joyce Gooden and Mr. Charles White, these two organizations actively participated in all phases of the project.

The panels and artifacts from the exhibition are now housed in Buckingham County. A long-term temporary museum exhibition will open soon. The Buckingham County Training School Commemoration, Inc. and the Buckingham County Chapter of the Afro-American Life and History Society are actively raising funds to build a much needed community center, which will house the Black History Museum.

Finally, a special thanks goes to Kirby Malone, Director of GMU's art galleries;and Gail Scott-White and Mahogany Murray for their amazing technical assistance.
