Since Germans have been coming to the United States for
so long, there have been a couple of places where they departed in
Germany and arrived in the United States. Most of the time for the
nineteenth century, Germans left from the port in Hamburg of Prussia.
However, in America, they arrived in many different places. Through the
beginning of the colonial era, Germans were arriving in New Amsterdam
(LOC). Then, around 1820, Castle Garden opened in New York at the tip
of Manhattan by The Battery. Following that, there was the opening of
Ellis Island. Throughout all of these arrivals, there was a wave of
German immigrants to the United States about every forty years. Coming
out of these places, they were close to New York and Pennsylvania. In
Pennsylvania, there were a lot of farming opportunities. In New York,
there were a lot of factory and restaurant jobs. The bad part of living
in New York, many of the Germans lived in tenement houses, which were
filled with disease and overcrowded living (Immigration). There are
still large populations of German-Americans in both Pennsylvania and
New York today. Germans will always have their mark on American
society, especially in Pennsylvania and New York. Ever since the founding of Jamestown, Germans have been creating bigger and bigger German-American communities. The land of opportunities truly did bring the Germans success. From farming, to Ellis Island, the United States was an important part of German history. Germans contributed a lot to the American society, and it just does not get any better than this. |
