were so important because a majority of their contributions to
the United States were made during these colonial times. One of their
contributions can be their large numbers of population added to the
United States. William Penn was not German, but many of the Germans
moved to Germantown, a city that he founded. Later, this town would
turn into part of Philadelphia. Also, written German work played very
important roles in the American society. In 1742, the first bible in
America was printed by German printer, Christopher Saur. Another
example are the many German newspapers, such as Henrich Millers Pennsylvanischer Staatsbote, because

As American history was going through the 19th century, the German-American population was growing drastically. Germans came from many different parts of the German empire, but mostly Pomerania, East Prussia, West Prussia, Hesse, Bavaria. Through the years 1840-1889, Germans made up a quarter of the number of immigrants coming to America (New World) One main reason why they made up a large number of the immigrant population was because of their chain migrations. When the Germans would communicate with family and friends back home through letters, they talked about the many different living opportunities the United States had to offer. Most of the time, one person of the family, usually the father, came over to the United States to work and experience living too. Once they approved of living in the United States, they started to bring many of their families over (PROQUEST). At this time, there was also a huge baby boom causing the population to rise from 45 million people in 1880 to 56 million people in 1900 (JSTOR). |
