What
does membership in Phi Delta Kappa cost?
Payment
at the time of initiation totals $85
and includes international and chapters dues for the next full year,
and an initiation fee of $5.
International dues are $50
per year. GMU's annual chapter dues are $35,
which include a $5
tax- deductible PDK Foundation donation.
What
does membership offer?
In
addition to the Kappan, "News, Notes, and Quotes," and legislative
newsletter, the George Mason University (GMU) Chapter #1368 has
its own "Newsletter" which offers an opportunity for publication
of upcoming events, recognition of individual members, and articles
on critical issues and innovative programs in education.
GMU's
diverse membership of over 250 professionals includes university
and college professors, administrators, and consultants, classroom
teachers, counselors, educational specialists, school administrators,
and outstanding graduate students.
The
five meetings each year are opportunities to get to know fellow
Kappans and to be professionally inspired, informed, and stimulated
by them and by guest speakers. Besides our annual Technology Conference,
held during GMU's Spring Break, meetings are sometimes co-sponsored
with other education-minded groups. In addition, a joint annual
meeting with the Northern Virginia Chapter of PDK is planned each
year. The GMU Chapter also sponsors the competitive Awards for Excellence
given to teachers who have made outstanding innovations in their
fields. Other meetings include initiations and presentations by
selected speakers.
Since
its founding September 23, 1977, by a nucleus of faculty and graduate
students, the GMU Chapter has been dedicated to the ideals of SERVICE,
RESEARCH, and LEADERSHIP.
At
the annual Awards Banquet, service and leadership are recognized
with the following awards: Outstanding Service to Education in Northern
Virginia; Certificates of Service; Kappan of the Year Award; Longevity
Awards; and, Awards for Excellence. In addition, scholarships are
granted to the Outstanding Initial Certification Student and the
Outstanding Post Certification Student.
Further,
research proposals are solicited, selected, and submitted to PDK
International for funding.
Membership
in Phi Delta Kappa offers educators a fellowship based on common
interests and ideals devoted to the promotion of free public education.
