Feature of Cognitive Apprenticeship

Learning Activities - as evidenced in Prototype

(See the 'Your Experience' Page and then the 'activities' link)

Explaining:

Explaining will be a part of every activity. It will be especially evident in the 'Models of Practice' exercise. (See sample lesson plan). As the novices progress in their learning, the amount of 'explaining' will fluctuate. The coach must be able to determine when and how much this occurrs.

Modeling:

Like explaining, modeling will occur in nearly every activity. Especially the first time a novice encounters a learning activity. For example, a coach may model a time or two how to perform personal study, or write a reflection statement, but not any more than that.

Coaching/Feedback:

This will also happen during nearly every activity. As the learners engage in different activities, the coach can give informal 'nudges' as necessary. However, there will also be more 'formal' opportunites for the coaches to give feedback to their learners. Learners may also receive peer feedback

Articulation:

Here the learners will be able to 'speak' what they know. This may come in the form of mini- lectures or presentations to others or role plays, etc.

Exploration:

Learners will have the opportunity to explore alternative explanations or answers to what they are learning or are 'puzzled about'. They may also set new learning goals through this experience.

Discussion, Personal Study

Reflection:

Learners will reflect on what they are learning. Sometimes this may be in the form of an informal discussion after an activity, or it may be a 'set aside' activity at any point during the day. It is to help the learner focus their studies and evaluate their performance.
