Faculty Profile:

Dr. Mohan Venigalla’s 32+ years of career in civil engineering included stints in consulting, research and teaching at several prestigious institutions including The University of Tennessee, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, The Volpe National Transportation Systems Center, Wilbur Smith Associates (now CDM Smith) and George Mason University. His primary expertise is in the area of transportation systems analysis and planning with an emphasis on sustainable transportation. His research specialization includes transportation air quality, transit-oriented developments, shared mobility and urban freight planning.

In early days of his career as a consultant, Dr. Venigalla worked on several World Bank sponsored transportation improvement projects in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Dr. Venigalla was the primary analyst for the original travel demand estimation that led to the establishment of the now famous Healthline in Cleveland, OH. Dr. Venigalla’s research on air quality received national acclaim and was recognized by National Academy of Sciences with the prestigious Pyke Johnson Award. Venigalla has been invited to present his research on bikeshare-pricing at several reputable academic institutions around the world. To date, Dr. Venigalla authored or coauthored nearly 100 journal articles, conference papers or technical reports.

In his role as the program director and associate department chair for 8-years, Dr. Venigalla was primarily responsible for growing the undergraduate civil engineering program at GMU by nearly four-fold (from 73 in 2003 to 295 in 2011). As an active member of ASCE, Venigalla served as an associate editor of the ASCE Journal of Computing in Civil Engineering during 2001-2012. He also served on TRB committees on Transportation Air Quality and Transportation Planning for Small and Medium Sized Urban Areas. He currently serves as the Vice President of ATPIO, which is a non-profit organization that acts as a liaison among globally dispersed transportation professionals of Indian origin.

Dr. Venigalla received civil engineering degrees from Sri Venkateswara University (B.Tech), Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (MS), and The University of Tennessee, Knoxville (MS and PhD). He is a registered professional engineer in the Commonwealth of Virginia and champions professional licensure among students and alumni of GMU engineering programs.
