In 1703, he published "Explication de l'Arithmetique Binaire," introducing the concept of representing numbers using only two symbols, typically 0 and 1. This binary system forms the core of modern computing, where data is stored and processed in binary code. It paved the way for the development of digital computers, which rely on binary logic to perform complex calculations. Leibniz was also interested in automating reasoning and computation. He designed a calculating machine, known as the "Step Reckoner," which could perform basic arithmetic operations automatically.
